Book Review: The School for Good and Evil: The Last Ever After

This Review will contain some Spoilers. Read at your own risk!

The Last Ever After is the 3rd book of the School for Good and Evil series by Soman Chainani. For those who haven’t read the book, you might want to read the first two books so you can find out how the story goes so far and this review is about the third book which is the Last Ever After so if you want to find out more about the third book, continue reading but do not fret, I will mention some of the plot of the first two books.

The series is mainly about two best friends named Agatha and Sophie. Agatha has black hair, she likes grim stuff and she is always in black, on the other hand, Sophie has blonde hair, she loves beautification and she’s always wearing pink. Sophie dreams of being a princess, while Agatha is accused and seen by the town folk as a witch.Sophie and Agatha both live in Gavaldon, a town in the middle the woods where every four years two kids are kidnapped and are taken to the School for Good and Evil. A school with two twin towers, one for Good and one for Evil. When the School master kidnapped Sophie and Agatha, Agatha ends up in the School for Good while Sophie ends up in the School for Evil. Both were confused since none of them fit in both schools since Sophie believes that she deserves to be in the School for Good and not in the School for Evil while Agatha just wants to go home. They tried to get out of the Schools but there is no way out because the one and only way out of the schools is through a fairy tale. (Read the first and second book [A World without Princes] to find out more about the adventures of Sophie and Agatha in the School for Good and Evil.) (Spoiler ahead) Sophie falls for the handsome prince Tedros, the son of King Arthur and this was starting to go between Sophie and Agatha’s friendship because Sophie was willing to betray her friends just to be with her prince. Tedros flirts with Sophie at first and He believes that they were really switched and that Agatha was indeed an evil witch . Agatha just wanted to go home and to do that she needed to help Sophie win Tedros so their fairy tale could end and they could finally escape from the horrors of that school. Later in the story, Tedros and Sophie fights and Sophie blames Agatha. Agatha was devastated for she was alone once again with not even one friend. Agatha then tried to improve herself and made herself beautiful, at first she thought that Professor Dovey changed her completely, she later found out that all she needed to look beautiful was a smile. Tedros then fell for Agatha and he realized that he had been picking her instead of Sophie from the begging. Agatha becomes the Princess of Tedros and Sophie becomes a witch. They end up realizing that they were in the right school all along. For both of them are 100 % Good and 100% Evil.  Soon in the story, Agatha forgives Sophie even though she was already a wicked witch and they became friends again, but this was changed in the second book where Agatha and Sophie fights for true love, in the new school for Good and Evil which is now the School for Boys and Girls. Sophie becomes a boy named Filip of Mount Honora and she/he becomes Tedros’ best friend. This story ends up with Sophie staying in the school with the evil but now young (because of her kiss) School Master and Agatha and Tedros going away forever for their Happily Ever After.

The School for Good and Evil: The Last Ever After is about the Tale of Sophie and Agatha who begs to be rewritten. Both were not satisfied with their endings. This leads to Tedros and Agatha going back to the woods for their best friend Sophie who then accepts the proposal of the Evil, Handsome and Young School Master named Rafal to be his Queen , believing that He is her true love. After accepting his ring and becoming his queen. There was no longer a School for Good and Evil but a School for Old and New, the New school is composed of the Evers and Nevers studying evil and the Old school is composed of Villains from old fairy tales who rewrites their stories by killing their heroes letting the Evil win against Good. Agatha and Tedros were sent to the woods by  Callis, Agatha’s mother  and they find the League of Thirteen composed of old heroes from fairy tales. There they meet Merlin, the wizard who took care of Tedros when he was younger. Tedros fainted when He saw Merlin because he believed that he was long dead. Soon they realized that the sun was melting, Merlin then told them that it was due to their story book being open for a long time and if it wasn’t closed soon the world will end. Merlin helped them get through the gates of the school for old and new by changing Agatha and Tedros into Essa and Edgar (With Hester, Dot and Anadil’s help) so they can rescue Sophie and get the Excalibur to break the ring so they can kill the School Master and Everything will return to normal. They soon rescue Sophie and but she refused to break her ring because she fears that the School Master will kill her, when she realized that she was betrayed by the ring and that Tedros was no really his true love after kissing him. She goes back to the school master. They soon lead an Evil Army of undead old villains so they can kill Agatha and Tedros. Sophie and Agatha then found the Tale of Vanessa and Callis, the tale of their mothers. It was revealed that Callis was buried in the graveyards of evil because she was evil and that she tricked Stefan into marrying her and she asked Callis for a potion to bare his child. Callis warned her to not take the potion for it will have a great price to pay but like always Vanessa ignored it. She gave birth to two daughters, One was blonde and beautiful who looks a lot like Stefan while the other had Black hair and was ugly and she looks a lot like Vanessa. Vanessa gave the kid to Callis and she took it as her own. Vanessa died miserable even though she was beautiful, because Stefan couldn’t love her and her daughter (Which was Sophie) and she knew that he has an infidelity with Honora. Later in the story, Sophie was told to kill her own father, Stephan but she breaks the ring instead.  This fixed everything. Agatha and Tedros heads back to Camelot with Guinevere and Lancelot for the prince’s coronation as King and Agatha as his Queen. Sophie was left behind in the School for Good and Evil as the new Dean of the School for Evil.

Personal opinion:

This book is amazing! It’s your old fairy tales with the same characters and everything but it opens up a new version of the same story inside. It makes you believe that Happily Ever Afters are not as easy and it’s not exactly as it goes in fairy tales. This book adds a sense of realism to all the fairy tales I’ve read in my life. It’s not just your simple ‘wait for your prince to save you’ type of story.

The characters are just simply adorable (especially Tedros and Agatha in my opinion) even the evil ones, Sophie and Rafal are both admirable but I’ve known from the beginning that they won’t last long. The Plot twists are amazing, it comes to the point where you don’t know who’s good and evil anymore. It’s just simply thrilling but most important of all. It shows you the beauty of an unusual friendship where Evil and Good can be friends and no boy can come between that. The ending was also wonderful, with Leonora Lesso dying and everything she said about her and Dove Clarissa about their resemblance to Agatha and Sophie broke my heart and it was nice to see Sophie to turn her back on Evil for a friend.
Completely alternate from people betraying their friends for Evil. (One of the best things I love about this book.) Also I love the Cover and the Illustrations with in the book

Cover and Some Illustrations:

I love the Art and Illustrations in this book.
Here are some examples of the Illustrations including the digital and actual cover of the book.

Thoughts after Reading it:

Happily Ever After: You have to fight before you get that

Marriage: unlike in books, they’re not as perfect. (Adding realism to the world of fairytale is amazing! This is amazing)
I’ve never expected seeing such characters in situations that they will never be in or do (like the old characters esp. Cinderella at the cave)

Sophie and Agatha: Then being sisters are just simply stunning. (Tale of Cannies and Vanessa is one of my favorite parts of this book)

Never Families: It’s sad that Never families can’t stay together (That they don’t last). Same with some families in real. I guess Nevers and Evers have their own versions in real life.

The Flow of the Story: Some of the statements from the First two books contradict the statements in this book

Favorite Characters:
I have to say Essa of Bloodbrook and Edgar of Bloodbrook. The genderbends of Tedros and Agatha. They’re so funny and sweet at the same time.

OTP: Agatha and Tedros. Sweet, Funny and I love the way these two made progress with their own characters and in their relationship. They’re not the usual Princess will depend on the prince story or The Prince will all be strong, not needing of his princess, just looks and exercise story. It showed the sides of a Princess and a Prince that’s not even fitting for the character. This book showed the a Princess and Prince can’t always have that picture perfect relationship and that they can be ordinary people too.

Unforgettable Scenes and Quotes:

You ditch me first year for him when you were a girl, you ditch me second year for him when you were a boy. You lie and cheat and steal for him while he treats you like crap, and I help you and care for you and worship you like a queen while you treat me like crap! What does that guy have that I don’t? What makes him so lovable and me so unworthy? Know how many times I’ve studied him like a book or sat in the dark picturing every last shred of him trying to understand why he’s more of a person than me? or Master- Raphael or Michaelangelo or Donatello or whatever you want to call him to make yourself feel better- just because he looks like you want him to look and says what you want to hear? When you could have someone who’s honest, kind and real?
-Hort

Once happiness is gone between two people, I don’t think it ever comes back.
-Princess Uma

Go ahead, Laugh. You can name your children blond and blonder.

-Agatha (Jealous over Tedros and Sophie)

Never pegged you as a jealous type.

– Tedros’ response

Each of us tried to hold on to love at some point in our lives … only to see that same love turn against us one day. Villain families are like dandelions- fleeting and toxic. Try to hold on to them and you are battling against the wind.
-Lady Lesso

Ratings for this book is 10/10: Totally worth the read. Best for people who wants to travel inside a fairy tale.
